The government modified the way food stamp benefits are distributed to recipients in 2002 by switching to the electronic benefits transfer (EBT) method. Food stamp recipients receive a card, issued by J.P. Morgan bank, which gets re-loaded each month. After you make a purchase with your card, the remaining balance is listed at the bottom of your receipt. If you lose your receipt or want to check the balance on your card without making a purchase, you can do so online or by calling the EBT hot line.
