How to Transfer Money to Haiti

Haiti has always been a nation steep in poverty. After the major earthquakes that shook the island and further destroyed its infrastructure, Haitian residents are in greater need of financial support. You can send money to Haitian friends or relatives from the United States using a few different services. Be aware of the currency conversion rate. One U.S. dollar equals 42.2500 Haitian gourdes.

Step 1

Send money to an individual in Haiti using Western Union. Western Union will allow you to send money in person, by phone or online to Haiti. The person receiving the funds will have to have to show identification and can only pick up the funds in person. There is a transfer fee. For example, Western Union charges $9 to send $100 to Haiti. Sent funds will be available to the recipient minutes after sending it. Western Union has mas many locations through Haiti to pick up funds. Step 2

Send money to an individual in Haiti using MoneyGram. MoneyGram is similar to Western Union, you can send money online, in person or by phone. MoneyGram charges a fee of $14 to send $100 to Haiti from the United States. Funds will be available for pick up sometime the same day that the funds were sent. MoneyGram has many locations throughout Haiti to pick up funds. The person receiving the funds will have to show identification. Step 3

Send money to an individual or organization in Haiti using Fonkoze.org. Fonkoze is actually associated with City National Bank of New Jersey and Fonkoze Financial Services in Haiti. The organization provides micro-loans to local entreprenuers to help fight Haitian poverty and build economic development. They also allow those living in the U.S. to send money to Haiti. Before you send money to an individual or organization, a bank account must be set up for that individual or organization. The sender or the recipient may set up the account by sending in an application form or by calling the customer service department. You can wire money from your bank account to the Fonkoze account, or send in a check or money order. The check or money order must be payable to "Fonkoze" and include the recipient's Fonkoze bank account number. There is a fee of $10 to send up to $1,000, or $25 to send between $1,001 and $2,000 to Haiti. A flat fee of $10 is charged to senders sending money to churches or organizations in Haiti regardless of the amount sent. Recipients can pick up funds at a Fonkoze Financial Services Center.
