As the deadline to file your 2009 tax return approaches, it may become necessary to have your return delivered priority mail. FedEx has an excellent reputation of delivering on time, saving you the cost of any penalties for filing a late return. You can schedule a pick-up by calling FedEx or going online to their website. If scheduling from their website, you can obtain a pickup history record, giving you the ability to check, edit or cancel the pickup.

Preparing Your Return

Fill out all the forms necessary for a complete tax return. Arrange all forms in the proper order, starting with Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. Include all supporting statements behind those forms in the same order as the form they refer to.

Attach all copies of Forms W-2, W-2G and 2439 to the front of Form 1040. If any federal tax was withheld, also attach Form 1099-R to the front of Form 1040.

Include a daytime phone number where you can be reached in case the IRS has any questions about your return.

Direct deposit is the quickest and safest manner to receive a refund. Include your financial institution’s routing and account numbers on the appropriate form. Place them at the back of the return.

Include a check or money order for the amount owed payable to the United States Treasury, along with form 1040-V. Use the same name, social security number, address, daytime telephone number, tax year and type of return you are filing (i.e., Form 1040 or Form 1040EZ) as the one on all your tax forms.

Sign the return. Your spouse must also sign, if it is a joint return.

Place all forms inside the envelope provided to you with your tax package. If you did not receive an envelope, go to http://www.IRS.gov/file/content/0,,id=105693,00.html for the exact mailing address for your state, or look up the address in the tax instructional booklet section called “Where Do You File?”

Tips

  • Be sure that the postmarked date is on or before April 15. When scheduling your pick-up be sure that the package will be postmarked the day they pick it up. Ask for a receipt from FedEx, which shows the mailing date of your package for tax record purposes. Make a copy of your tax return for your own records.
