Because of e-commerce, transferring money from Chile to the United States has become a lot simpler than it used to be several years ago. There are many money-transfer companies, such as PayPal, Western Union, and MoneyGram that allow you to transfer money at competitive rates. The process of sending money is simple, and the funds are usually available for pickup within 10 minutes of transfer.

Sending Money using PayPal

Log on to your PayPal account. Register for a new account, if you don’t have a valid PayPal account already. Registration is free. Select country, language and account type. You can choose from “Personal,” “Premier” and “Business” accounts.

Fill in other account information and select “Agree and Create Account” button at the bottom of next page.

Add funds to your PayPal account by clicking “Add Funds” option from top menu. PayPal doesn’t charge you anything for adding funds from a bank located in your country of residence. The processing time for adding the funds is five to seven business days.

Click “Send Money” from the top menu to send funds. Enter the recipient’s email address in the “To” field. Also, enter the amount and the currency in which funds are to be sent.

Give reason for making the transfer and select “Continue.”

Make sure all information on the next page is correct. Click on “Send Money” to transfer the funds to the recipient’s PayPal account. If the recipient does not have a valid PayPal account, he will receive an email from PayPal asking him to sign up with PayPal to receive the funds.

Send Money using Western Union/MoneyGram

Find the nearest Western Union or MoneyGram agent location depending on the company you want to use. Both have locations listed on their websites.

Visit the agent location and provide information regarding the recipient, including the recipient’s full name and address.

Pay the amount you want to transfer as well as the transaction fees. Get information about the transfer fee from the company agent. After the payment is made, the agent will process the transaction and give you a MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number)/reference number. MoneyGram uses a reference number, and Western Union assigns an MTCN.

Share the MTCN/reference number with the recipient.

Ask the recipient to visit the nearest agent location of the company. The funds will be available for pickup in 10 to 15 minutes of transfer. The recipient must provide personal identification, such as passport or driver’s license. Upon disclosing the MTCN/reference number, the funds will be handed over to the recipient.
