An online stock screener is a research tool on financial websites that helps you find stocks based on certain search criteria. You can use the price filter on a stock screener to search for stocks by price. This filter lets you specify a maximum and minimum stock price. The screener generates a list of stocks that are greater than or equal to the minimum price and less than or equal to the maximum price. You can then research the stocks on the list individually to find potential investment candidates.

Visit any financial website that provides a free stock screener, such as Google Finance, MarketWatch or USA Today.

Find the price filter in the screener’s search criteria. If the price filter is not listed among the screener’s default criteria, you may need to select the price filter from a drop-down menu or from a list of additional criteria.

Click in the minimum price box, which is typically the leftmost box on the price filter. Type the minimum price you want to apply to your search in the box. A screener may require a number in the minimum and maximum boxes. If you do not want to apply a minimum price to your search, type “0” in the minimum box. For this example, assume you want to search for stocks that are between $10 and $40. Type “10” in the minimum price box.

Click in the maximum price box, which is typically the rightmost box on the price filter. Type the maximum price you want to apply to your search in the box. If you do not want to apply a maximum price to your search, type a very high number, such as 999,999, in the box so that the screener includes all stocks that are least your minimum price. Continuing with the previous example, type “40” in the maximum price box.

Click the button that commands the screener to search for stocks. The screener generates a list of stocks based on your selected minimum and maximum prices. Using the prices from the example, the screener generates a list of stocks that are between $10 and $40.

Tips

  • Click the heading at the top of the price column to sort the list of stocks from the lowest to highest price or from the highest to lowest price.

Warnings

  • Different stock screeners use different prices in their databases that may not be the most current prices. For example, a screener may use closing prices from the previous trading session or the price from the last reported sale of a stock. Look up each stock’s real-time price quote on any financial website to verify that it meets your criteria.
