Whether you lost your tax bill or just need to get an updated copy for your records, requesting an IRS bill is a fairly straightforward process. Getting a copy of a bill usually only requires that you contact the IRS and make a request for your balance. Outlined below are the processes you’ll need to follow in order to request a bill by phone, mail, and in person.
Call the Internal Revenue Service customer service line at 1-800-829-1040 to request a copy of your balance due. The representative will ask you a series of security questions for verification purposes in order to access your account. You can request that the representative give you the amount of your bill verbally or in writing. If you request a paper copy, allow 1-2 weeks for receipt of the bill in the mail. Your bill will contain the amount of tax due plus the amount of penalty and interest that have been added to the original tax amount. The bill is usually calculated to included penalty and interest beginning 10 days after the date listed on the bill so that the total bill amount due includes mailing time.
Complete Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) and mail it to the IRS processing center for your state (see the instructions for Form 4506-T for a list of mailing addresses). Check the box in section 6, part b to receive a copy of your account transcript. The transcript will include the amount of tax, penalties, and interest outstanding on your account. It will also include a list of any payments or credits which have been made to your account. After you have completed the form, mail it to the IRS processing center for your state.
Go to your local IRS walk-in office and request a copy of your tax bill. Be sure to bring valid identification as the IRS representative will request it for verification purposes.
