Hillsborough County, Florida, home to the City of Tampa, has 17,755 homeless men, women and children, according to the 2011 Hillsborough County homeless count. Fortunately for the homeless, Tampa features several transitional housing programs for homeless people in the county. Also, the Homeless Coalition of Hillsborough County (homelessofhc.org) is a nonprofit organization that assists Tampa's homeless find homeless shelters and transitional housing.
Located on Florida Avenue, Metropolitan Ministries (metromin.org) is a Christian-based charity that allows homeless adults and youth to stay at its shelter. This charity features the Uplift U Transitional Housing program. This program runs for 18 months and provides services such as counseling, food, housing and education. Uplift U also finds off-site housing for homeless people who need to live in a neighborhood setting; this usually applies to families with multiple children. Another program, Rapid Re-Housing, attempts to find housing for homeless people in less than a week. Metropolitan Ministries has been operating since 1972.
Liberty Manor for Veterans
The Liberty Manor for Veterans (libertymanor.org) is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide transitional housing for U.S. military veterans. This charity only provides housing assistance to male veterans. Liberty Manor has four transitional homes throughout the Tampa area: three of the homes are in Tampa and one of them – Liberty III Transitional Home – is in Largo, Florida. In addition to providing housing, this charity organization also attempts to help its veterans find employment and receive pensions or disability funds for their service in the military. Liberty Manor was founded in 2006.

Alpha House of Tampa
The Alpha House of Tampa (alphahouseoftampa.org) is in West Tampa and provides transitional housing for women who are pregnant or have children. This housing offers assistance to women who are in abusive domestic situations or homeless. The Alpha House organization has three houses which are able to accommodate up to eight women and their infants. Eight two-bedroom apartments are available for eight to 16 women who have older children. Alpha House provides parenting classes and counseling sessions through its Parents As Teachers program. The average stay per guest at Alpha House's homes is 131 days.
The Salvation Army is a nationwide nonprofit organization that provides housing assistance to homeless people. In Tampa, the Salvation Army has three homes for the homeless. The Red Shield Lodge Emergency Shelter has 125 beds, and the shelter is available to homeless people who need immediate assistance. For women and children, the Salvation Army provides 50 beds at the Hospitality House. Up to 44 adult homeless men may find transitional residence at Salvation Army's Hope House. All three homes are within 10 minutes of downtown Tampa. The Salvation Army has been in service in the greater Tampa area since 1893.
