List of Charities to Donate to

Donating to charity is something many people do, whether to feel good about doing something for others to simply for the tax deduction charitable donations provide. All charitable contributions made to 501(C)3 corporations registered with the Internal Revenue Service are eligible for taxpayers to claim as itemized deductions on federal income tax returns. Most charities accept a plethora of donations such as clothing, furniture, appliances, vehicles and cash donations. When you decide to donate to charity consider donating to one that supports a cause for which you are passionate.


Most people are aware of the Goodwill. Goodwill is an organization of thrift stores that provides jobs to those in need and uses the proceeds from the sales of donated items to support local charities and programs in the communities where each store is located. Goodwill stores are located all over the United States. Goodwill accepts new and gently used clothing, furniture, appliances, home accessories, vehicles and monetary donations.

Salvation Army

Another well known charitable organization is the Salvation Army. With locations all over the United States, the Salvation Army’s goal is to fund and organize adult rehabilitation centers in every community in which they have a thrift store. The Salvation Army accepts clothing, furniture, cash and other in kind donations. The proceeds from donated items sold in the Salvation Army thrift stores is used to fund rehabilitation programs for men, women and families suffering from substance abuse and other problems.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a charity that builds and provides affordable housing for families all over the United States. Families receiving Habitat homes assist volunteers in the building of their homes, which are built using donated land, donated funds and donated materials. If you have land, funds or building materials to donate Habitat for Humanity is an organization with locations all over the country.

Ronald McDonald House

One of the most heartbreaking occurrences is to find out your child is suffering from a severe illness. Making matters worse is when your child’s illness is one so bad you must travel far from home for treatments, which is an expensive endeavor. You might have to leave your job, your home and your lives to be with your child while he undergoes treatment. The Ronald McDonald House provides housing for families whose children are undergoing medical treatment far away from home so families are not separated; the housing is very low cost or free to families who need it. Your donations will help provide housing to a family so they don’t have to leave their very sick child.
