Mold, a fungus found in numerous environments can cause significant problems after prolonged exposure, such as wheezing, skin irritation, nasal congestion and eye problems. In some cases, severe reactions to mold occur, causing chronic lung problems, including difficulty breathing or even an infection of the lung from the mold. For homeowners or property owners dealing with the spread of mold, mold remediation or mold removal can cause a significant financial strain. Government grants for homeowners with mold provide funding to offset the costs of mold removal.
Environmental Protection Agency
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides grants for small businesses and other institutions to find new mold remediation techniques. Although these grants do not provide funding directly to individuals or families, they do give an opportunity for community members to participate in studies and allow tests to be conducted on their home to see what techniques remove mold.
Federal Emergency Management Agency
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides financial assistance through grants for individuals and families affected by a natural disaster or manmade disaster. In order to qualify for such a grant, FEMA will evaluate the type of mold growing in a home. A contractor will need to provide an accurate estimate of the removal costs for the mold, information on the type of the mold and the location of the mold.
Department of Housing and Urban Development
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides block grants for Native Americans whose homes need to have mold removed. The block grants funds Indian tribes registered with the government and designated housing entities. The funds provided focus on construction, rehabilitation, and will focus on employing the low-income or unemployed individuals to complete the work.
