People who are retired may no longer qualify for their former employer's dental insurance program. This means they need an insurance program to help cover the costs of dental needs such as routine checkups, cavities, crowns and even oral surgery. There are specific dental plans available to retired military personnel and their families, former government employees and the retired population at large.
AARP Dental Insurance
Members of AARP may enroll in the AARP dental insurance program, which is administered by Delta Dental. There are two plan options. "Plan A" covers 100 percent of diagnostic and preventative care, while "Plan B,"which is less expensive, covers 80 percent. Both plans offer partial coverage of periodontal maintenance cleanings and denture repair. Only "Plan A" provides coverage for dental accidents -- it offers 100 percent coverage for those who pay their premiums on a yearly basis. Plan participants should note that AARP Dental Insurance does not cover procedures that can be covered by Medicare.

TRICARE Retiree Dental Program
The TRICARE Retiree Dental Program was created in 1998 and is also administered by Delta Dental. Eligible retirees include people who receive or are eligible to receive Uniformed Services retired pay, members of the retired National Guard or Reserve, and spouses of current members or children of members who are under the age of 21, under the age of 23 but enrolled as a full-time student or who were disabled prior to losing eligibility status. All Medal of Honor recipients and their eligible family members may also enroll in the program. TRICARE Retiree Dental insurance pays for 100 percent of diagnostic and preventative care. The annual deductible is $50, and the annual maximum out-of-pocket cost per person is $1,200.

U.S. Office of Personnel Management Dental Insurance
Retired Federal and postal employees and their eligible family members may enroll in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management dental insurance plan. This plan has no pre-existing condition limitations. Retired employees as well as current spouses and unmarried children under the age of 22 or disabled children are eligible for the program. As of November 2010, participants may select from seven different insurance plans including Aetna Life Insurance Company, Government Employees Health Association, MetLife and United Concordia Companies, as well as three regional plans. Costs and coverage will vary based upon plan choice.
