If you have a fence that has been damaged, you may be able to get help with the cost of a replacement or repair from your homeowners insurance company. You will need to file an insurance claim to receive help and report the damages. You should educate yourself on the best way to file a claim with your insurance agent to make sure that your damages are covered properly.

Step 1

Contact the police department if your fence was damaged by a vehicle or vandalism. If you are unsure of how the damage happened, it is still a good idea to file a police report.

Step 2

Write down the name of the police officer you speak with and ask her for a copy of the report for your insurance company.

Step 3

Inspect the fence where it has been damaged. Write down a detailed description of exactly what is broken, bent, gouged and/or missing. Also note the date and time when you discovered the damage.

Step 4

Take photos of the entire damaged area from all angles possible.

Step 5

Contact your insurance agent and explain the situation to him. Prepare to meet with an insurance adjuster at your home when the agent specifies. Have your photos, written report and police report handy.
