How to Appeal a Denied Life Insurance Claim. When you're dealing with life insurance issues, it's already a difficult time in your life. And when a claim is denied, that can add even more stress to you and your family. But that denied claim isn't necessarily final. You have the right to appeal.

Step 1

Contact the life insurance company. Find out their reason for denial so you have a clear understanding of what you're fighting.

Step 2

Gather all your important information. Verify that the insurance account was paid in full and the account was in good standing. You should also gather up all benefits paperwork so you understand exactly what benefits were in place at the time of death.

Step 3

Find out the appeals process for the life insurance company. Each company is different, so you should probably call and ask their official policy.

Step 4

Submit your appeal to the life insurance company. Appeals should be submitted in a timely manner, otherwise your time to appeal may run out. Clearly state why you feel your claim should not have been denied and any evidence you have to support your claim. You should submit any supporting documents at this time. But make sure you have your own copy of everything in case there is confusion in the future.

Step 5

Call and check on your appeal. Even though it may take a while for your appeal to be investigated, you should periodically call and check on the process. If necessary, ask to speak to a manager. You may also ask for the appeal to be sent to the corporate office for further review.
