How to Stop All Property Taxes

The payment of property taxes are a necessary evil for anyone who owns property. These are a separate entity from other taxes such as village and school taxes. If you find yourself unable to pay property taxes or want to stop paying them altogether, there are a few options at your disposal.

Sell your house to cause all property taxes to halt immediately. This is the quickest way to stop paying property taxes. When you sell your home, the new owner will automatically become responsible for paying those taxes. You may list your home with a real estate agent or sell it independently. Once a new buyer has committed to purchasing the home, they will receive the property deed at closing.

Rent out or rent to own your house to a tenant. This option is ideal for people who want to keep equity in their home but do not want to pay the property taxes. Once the home has been rented to a tenant, you can include the property taxes into the cost of their rent. If you rent to own the house, the tenant must pay the taxes and they are also responsible for the homeowners insurance. Even if they leave or do not make a payment, you are still able to maintain ownership.

Call your local tax assessor or department of human services to see if you qualify for tax exemptions. There are a variety of programs available for those who cannot pay their property taxes. For example there are farm and religious exemptions as well as assistance for those who are disabled, elderly or low income.

Fill out the application and identify which program best suits your needs. Read very carefully so that you understand the requirements and to make sure you are eligible to receive assistance to cease property taxes. Include documents such as your most current property tax bill along with proof of how much money you earn. You will want to complete the application to the best of your knowledge and mail it in before the deadline. Sometimes, a person may qualify to have property taxes stopped or reduced, but will be denied because their application was not received on time. It usually takes two to four weeks to get a response to your application. If you are eligible, you will immediately save on property taxes.
