The Best Performing No-Load Mutual Funds

A mutual fund is a basket of dozens of stocks, usually in a particular sector, selected by an expert money manager. A mutual fund is either a load fund or a no-load fund. A load fund charges a commission or sales fee (often 2 to 5 percent) on the front or back end of the mutual fund transaction, meaning you either have less to invest to start with or you lose some when you cash out. No-load funds charge no commissions or sales fees. An expense ratio is a fund's operating expenses divided by the average dollar value of assets under management (average around 1.5 percent for actively managed funds). All mutual funds have operating expenses that reduce the return of the fund.
