Moving Checklist & Tips

The process of stuffing all your possessions into boxes and uprooting your family to change residences is stressful and even chaotic. The long list of responsibilities proves challenging for even the most organized families, making it almost guaranteed that something critical gets left out. To ensure your moving experience goes smoothly, start the process as early as possible and organize a checklist to help you stay on task.

Hire Movers

Decide early on in the process whether you want to hire professionals to move your belongings or do it yourself. If you plan on enlisting the help of movers, get started on researching moving companies early. You will benefit from doing your homework and calling around to as many different companies as possible to get the best quotes. You will save money by doing it yourself, but the peace of mind that comes from knowing your possessions are in the hands of professionals may prove worth the price.

Organize Your Possessions

Take time to go through each room of the house and sort all of your belongings in preparation for packing. Not only does this allow for a more efficient packing process, it also gives you the opportunity to decide what you plan on keeping and what you plan on getting rid of. Moving time is the perfect time to decide whether or not you want to keep that rugged old couch or just throw it out and save yourself the trouble of moving it.

Make A Change of Address Log

Remember that once you change homes, no one knows where to find you if you don't leave a forwarding address. To ensure your contacts are up to date on your new address, set aside each important piece of mail that comes your way and write down the contact number in a change of address log. Take time to contact each company or individual and let them know of your new address in advance so you don't have to spend hours doing it all at once later.

Obtain Packing Materials

Moving is a challenging process as it is; it becomes significantly harder if you are trying to move without good packing equipment. If you don't already own suitable boxes for moving from previous experiences, acquire them before you begin your move. Until you have something to put your possessions in, the moving out process remains at a standstill.

Pack Suitcases

Make sure you have one suitcase packed for each member of the family on moving day. Fill the suitcases with the standard possessions you bring on trips or short vacations: a few changes of clothes, toiletries and other essentials. This eliminates the need to immediately unpack everything the moment you get situated in your new home.
