How to Check to See if an Insurance Claim Went Through

When you file an insurance claim, whether it is for an automobile accident, property damage or life insurance, it can take a while for your claim to be processed. The extra time is necessary for the insurance company to accurately investigate your claim. The good news is that you don't have to remain in the dark during the investigation process. There are protocols in place for you to track your insurance claim to see if it went through successfully.

Step 1

Locate the claim number that is assigned to your claim. This number is generally provided to you at the time your claim is originally filed with the insurance company.

Step 2

Contact the insurance company's claims department. The number for the claim department will likely be included on your policy. If not, you can obtain the number by visiting the insurance company's website.

Step 3

Provide the insurance company representative with your claim number. Advise the representative that you would like to check the status of your claim.

Step 4

Check the status of your insurance claim online if you don't want to check over the phone. Most major insurance companies provide online claim checking options. Depending on the insurance company, it may be necessary to register a username and password.
