A state income tax refund can be tracked by checking with the state taxation agency where you filed your state income tax return. Taxpayers should wait at least 48 hours before attempting to track a state income tax refund that was filed electronically. A state income tax refund may be received within 30 days of electronically filing the state income tax return, according to the Turbo Tax website. When mailing a state income tax return, allow three to four weeks before attempting to track the status of the state income tax refund.
Log on to the department of revenue website that corresponds with the state where your income tax return was filed. Click the "Individuals" tab. Click on the "Check status" link. Provide information such as your name, Social Security number, tax year and amount of the expected refund. Check over your entries for accuracy. Providing incorrect information means you will not receive the status of your state income tax refund.
Call the state department of revenue office where the state income tax return was filed. This is an alternative way for taxpayers that do not have Internet access to track their state income tax refund. Be prepared to provide personal information, such as your Social Security number, name and expected refund amount. This will enable the department of revenue representative to verify your identity. The department of revenue representative will indicate if the state tax return was accepted and the date you can expect to receive the state income tax refund.
Go to the state department of revenue office in person. Bring a valid ID and a copy of your state tax return, if possible. Be prepared to provide your Social Security number and the expected refund amount if you do not have a copy of your state income tax return.
Contact your tax preparer if you did not do it yourself. The person or business that prepared your state income tax return should be able to tell you if your state income tax return was accepted or rejected. In addition, the tax preparer should be able to provide an approximate date as to when you will receive your state income tax refund.
