Types of Homeowners Insurance Claims

Homeowners insurance is designed to protect a property owner from damages or injuries that result from covered events known as perils. Insurance coverage can vary widely based on the type of policy, with some policies providing more complete coverage than others. There are several types of claims that can occur.

Wind and Hail

Wind and hail claims are the most common types of homeowners claims, with an average occurrence of 2.2 percent, according to QuoteScout.com. These claims cost insurance companies an average of about $6,600 per claim, not including the deductible that is assumed by the insured.

Water Damage

Another common claim type is water damage, which can include such things as leaking pipes, overflowing toilets and leaky ceilings. These occur in about 1.53 percent of homes, with an average claim cost of about $5,000.

Fire and Lightning

A less common homeowners insurance claim is damage caused by fire and lightning, which is reported by less than 1 percent of homeowners. This may be surprising considering that homeowners insurance is frequently referred to as fire insurance. Although these claims are relatively infrequent, damage tends to be much more severe, with an average claim cost of $19,500.

Dog Bites

This type of claim falls under the liability section of a homeowners insurance policy, because it typically occurs as a result of an action started by an injured third party. Depending on your policy, coverage might be provided whether the bite occurs on your property or off, as in a situation where the dog chases the injured party down the street.


Another type of liability claim is slip-and-fall, which involves a hazard on your property that causes a third party to fall and injure himself. Common examples include a person tripping over an object on your property, such as a child’s toy or a tool that was not properly stored, or by slipping on ice that was not cleared away.
