There are three ways to send money from Vietnam to other countries: Sending it from an agent location through a money-transfer company, such as MoneyGram; sending it online to the recipient’s bank account through a company, such as PayPal; or sending it by telephone through Western Union. The fee for a money transfer varies from company to company, but there are ways of determining the fee beforehand.
Send Money from an Agent Location
Click the first link in Resources to find a MoneyGram agent location near you. When you open the page, select Vietnam as the country from the list and enter your city and zip/postal code.
Click the second link in Resources to find out how much it will cost you to send the money through MoneyGram.
Visit the MoneyGram agent and take your passport along. Your driver’s license will work, too.
Ask the agent for the “Money transferring form.”
Enter all necessary details in the form, including your name and contact details. Also, enter the recipient’s name, address, phone number and the amount that you are sending out of Vietnam.
Give back the form along with the money and the fee.
Take the receipt and the reference number for the transaction from the clerk.
Call the receiving party and ask them to note down the reference number. The recipient will be asked for this number upon receiving the funds.
Send Money Online through PayPal
Click the third link in Resources to sign up for PayPal, a money transferring company that works differently than MoneyGram.
Click on “Get Started” under “Personal” and fill out the sign up form for creating your account on PayPal. Enter information such as your email address, nationality, current city of residence, state/province/region, postal code and the phone number. On the next page, enter your credit card/bank account information.
Click on “Send Money” once your account has been created.
Enter the email address of the person you are sending the money to. Also, enter your own email address and the amount that you want to send. Based on these figures, PayPal will show you how much it will cost you for transferring this amount.
Click “Continue” to confirm that you want to send the money. The recipient will then receive an email notifying him to set up an account with PayPal to receive the funds.
Send Money through Phone
Call Western Union at 1-800-225-5227 for sending money through phone.
Tell the customer service representative your full name, current city in Vietnam, address, credit/debit card number (Visa or MasterCard), date and the security code found at the back of the card, billing and calling phone number, your date of birth, name of the recipient and his current city of residence where he will receive the funds. You may also be asked for your driver’s license number or passport number for identification.
Note the “Preferred Customer ID Number” that the customer service rep gives you. This number will be helpful for future transactions so you do not have to provide all the information you provided in Step 2 again.
Tell in figures how much money you want to send. Do not forget to inquire about the fee for this transaction.
Note the Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) that the customer service rep gives you after you complete the transaction. Your recipient will be asked for this number when he goes to pick up the money at any Western Union agent location.
