Although newspaper deliverers are able to make some extra money delivering papers if they have a small route or two, there are some who are able to make a career out of paper delivery. Even those who don't make a career out of paper delivery are often at least able to supplement their incomes through paper delivery.
A paper deliverer must be reliable and punctual. Most newspapers require that the newspapers get to customers' homes before the customers leaves home for the day. Paper deliverers often deliver papers to multiple routes in a day, especially if they hope to earn a more significant paycheck. Some paper deliverers are responsible for delivering on their own routes, as well as overseeing the routes of other deliverers. He must be able to memorize his route to expedite his service.
The salary for a paper deliverer depends on the number of papers he delivers and the circulation of the newspaper for which he works. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics groups newspaper deliverers with other general drivers/sales workers. The median wage of those in these positions in 2008 was about $10.70 per hour. The middle 50 percent of delivery driver workers earned between $7.74 and $15.82 per hour. The highest 10 percent earned as much as approximately $21 per hour.
Due to the drop in newspaper circulation across the country, paper delivery jobs are not as common as they once were. Online and other digital formats have reduced the number of newspapers printed. Some prominent newspapers have even gone out of circulation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the total number of all driver/sales workers is expected to increase by 4 percent between 2008 and 2018, but this percentage is smaller than the expected growth of all positions nationwide.
