Prior to entering medical school, students seeking medical careers often enroll in pre-medicine programs during their undergraduate years. Pre-med programs include challenging curriculum in math and science, as well as preparatory work for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Similar to medical school, pre-med programs can be expensive. Luckily, there are scholarships and grants that help students pay for their pre-med education.
University of Montana Scholarships
The University of Montana provides pre-med students scholarships with individual awards of up to $1,000. The Donald M. Hetler Pre-Medicine Scholarship requires that students are enrolled in the university’s Pre-Medical Sciences Program and demonstrate financial need. Students should also have at least a 3.5 grade point average and plan to continue their education in the medical field.
The university’s Henry J. and Mary Lahiff Wiegnestein Scholarship in Pre-Medicine is targeted to both chemistry and pre-med students. Other pre-med scholarships offered by the University of Montana include the Rocky Mountain Eye Center Scholarship for students with grade point averages of 3.0 or higher and the Bernice A. Gleed Scholarship fund. The Bernice A. Gleed award is awarded to 10 recipients who have been enrolled at least two semesters at the University of Montana and possess a 3.3 GPA.
Palo Alto Foundation Medical Group (PAFMG) Pre-Medical Scholarship
High school students are eligible to apply for the Palo Alto Foundation Group (PAFMG) Pre-Medical Scholarship. The award is offered to students who plan to major in pre-medicine at a four-year college or university and pursue a career as a physician. Scholarships are equivalent to $20,000 per recipient, with $5,000 allotted for each undergraduate year. Applicants must be in the top 20 percentile of their class, provide transcripts and exhibit financial need. Additional materials, such as copies of federal tax returns from parents or a guardian, and a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), must also be submitted with the application.
